On 2 July 2019, the French financial market authority, the AMF, has taken a decision providing two measures approved by the ESMA and applicable since 1st August 2019:

  1. Prohibition of marketing, distribution or sale of binary options to retail investors in France or from France; and
  2. Restrictions to marketing, distribution or sale of contracts for differences (CFDs) in France or from France, to retail investors: leverage limits; close-out requirements as soon as the margin exceeds a certain level; negative account balances prohibition; mandatory issuance of a specific warning or information on the risks associated with the authorized product; prohibition of CFD providers to encourage the public to invest in such products; prohibition of activities that would amount to the circumvention of these intervention measures.
